Overall impression

The Tenterfield Terrier is a strong and agile working terrier. It is square in proportions. The length of the dog's head and neck should be in proportion to the overall body.

Looks

Size: Height at the withers 25.5–30.5 cm, ideal height 28 cm.

Coat: Smooth and short.

Color: White is the predominant color, with black, liver, and tan markings with or without tan markings. Tan markings are located on the cheeks, above the eyes, and on the hind legs. Tricolor is common. Brindle markings are permitted but not desirable. Solid color is not permitted. The skin should always be pigmented.

Head: Wedge-shaped, not elongated like the Fox Terrier. Muzzle and skull of equal length and their toplines parallel. A domed or apple-shaped head is a serious fault.

Eyes: Oval, not large, protruding or round. The eyes should be as dark as possible and have a lively expression, with pigmented eyelids. Light or different colored eyes are a fault.

Ears: V-shaped, slightly rounded at the tips, erect or semi-erect, set high on the outer edge of the skull. In semi-erect ears, the tip third folds forward. The ears are medium in size, neither large nor wide at the base. The length of the ear is approximately the same as the distance between the ears. The ears are thin (not thick).

Tail: Medium length, set high and carried erect when alert, but not curled over the back. The tail is carried high, reflecting the dog's bold nature. It may be long or it may be naturally bobbed, which can be any length. The tail should not be curled too much over the back.

Character

The Tenterfield Terrier is confident, docile and loyal to its owner. In its work, it is fearless and courageous, but at home it is a pleasant companion.

Intended use

Originally used as a ratter and companion dog, the breed is now used in a variety of hobbies.
